Chennai's History Project

The Challenge

  • Lack of inclusive historical literature on Chennai's socio-economic and political evolution.
  • Existing narratives often overlook the voices and perspectives of marginalized communities.
  • Need to preserve the city's cultural and political memory for future generations.
  • Inadequate public engagement with the city's complex historical movements and social transitions.

Our Approach

  • Collaborate with leading historians and academic institutions to document Chennai's layered history.
  • Partnered with Krea University and LEAD (IFMR) to curate research-based essays.
  • Hosted workshops and selected 10 unique essay proposals to explore key historical themes.
  • Organize an annual conference to present and discuss the research with the public.
  • Disseminate the work through books, podcasts, and events to ensure broader outreach.

Our Vision

  • Create an inclusive and well-researched archive of Chennai's socio-economic and political history.
  • Highlight underrepresented perspectives and grassroots movements.
  • Cultivate public interest in the city's past and its influence on today's urban life.
  • Build a lasting resource for students, researchers, and the public to understand Chennai's evolving identity.
