Chennai History Project

Iteration - 2

1919-1973

The Chennai History Project continues its multi-year commitment to deepening and expanding historical research on Chennai/Madras with the launch of Iteration 2. Building on the momentum of the first phase, this next cycle strengthens programmatic support for original scholarship, clearer timelines, and strategic research focus areas that were underrepresented in earlier work.

Iteration 2 invites historians, researchers, and independent scholars to explore Chennai’s rich, complex, and contested past between 1919 and 1973, a formative period marked by political transition, labour movements, urban transformation, and cultural pluralism. In addition to broad historical inquiry, this phase places special emphasis on working-class histories, linguistic and cultural landscapes (including Telugu and Urdu sources), and analytical engagements that move beyond elite narratives toward relational, social, and ecological understandings of the city.

Selected contributors will be supported through structured mentorship, editorial feedback, and opportunities to share their work at a dedicated workshop/conference in August 2027. Through Iteration 2, we seek to amplify underrepresented voices, document diverse experiences, and contribute to a more inclusive and analytical historical account of Chennai’s emergence as a modern metropolis.

Genesis

The motivation for this initiative came from a discussion on a book titled, "The Island at the Center of the World" between Vijay and his friend Balaji, in 2020. In the course of their discussions on the city's history, and interactions with 15 eminent historians working in this domain, the two friends saw several gaps in the tapestry of work available to the public.

Inspired by this and the vibrant historical archives of cities such as Manhattan, New York City, Chicago and London, they realised the need to document and preserve the socio-economic, political, and cultural history of this metropolis.

The initiative will focus on encouraging historical research and writing through small grants, peer support, and workshops/conferences.
